Les grands causses

"The Grands Causses is a relatively recent name for a group of high limestone plateaux, valleys and gorges that make up the southern part of the Massif Central. Ranging in altitude from 700 to 1,200 m, they are part of the montane zone and, more specifically, the mid-mountain zone.
In June 2011, the Grands Causses were added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage sites, following the inscription of the site Les Causses et les Cévennes: paysages culturels de l'agro-pastoralisme méditerranéen (The Causses and the Cévennes: cultural landscapes of Mediterranean agro-pastoralism) as a World Heritage site.
There are 4 Grands Causses or Causses Majeurs: the Méjean (located in Lozère and belonging to the Parc National des Cévennes), the Noir, the Larzac and the Sauveterre (belonging to the Parc Naturel Régional des Grands Causses, 1158 krn2, located in Aveyron).The Grands Causses are a favourite spot for nature sports enthusiasts, offering countless hiking trails.
The climate is cold and dry in winter and hot in summer. Autumn and spring add moderate temperatures to the magnificent landscape.
